Honoring Alex: a call to action for World Suicide Prevention Day

In memory of my beloved son Alexander (Alex), who left us too soon on October 2, 2019, I want to mark this World Suicide Prevention Day with a heartfelt message about the crucial importance of mental health and suicide prevention.

Alex, at just 25, was a vibrant soul who battled bravely with ADHD, Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. His artistic nature and kind heart touched everyone around him. While he faced these mental health challenges with incredible courage, the struggle eventually became too overwhelming.

As entrepreneurs, we often prioritize our businesses and dreams, pushing ourselves to the limit in pursuit of success. However, it’s essential to recognize that our mental well-being is as important as our professional accomplishments. Mental health struggles can touch anyone, regardless of their achievements or aspirations, and can significantly impact our professional lives.

In Alex’s honor, I urge you to take a moment today and every day to check in with yourselves and your loved ones. These small gestures of connection can make a world of difference. Reach out, listen, and offer support whenever you can.

Steps you can take to create a supportive environment for mental health

  • Seek professional help: If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to consult mental health professionals. Asking for help is never a sign of weakness.
  • Build a support network: Surround yourself with people who understand and support you. Sharing your feelings and challenges with trusted friends or support groups can alleviate some burdens.
  • Educate yourself and others: Spread awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention. Knowledge can break down the stigma and encourage more open conversations.
  • Practice self-care: Regularly engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Balancing work with personal time can significantly improve overall well-being.
  • Encourage open dialogue: Create an environment at work where mental health is openly discussed and supported. This can lead to a more compassionate and understanding business community.

In Alex’s memory, let’s commit to fostering a world where mental health is given the attention it deserves. Remember, it’s okay to seek help and offer help. You are not alone.
